How to Begin
To begin is hard. I’m finding it difficult to even begin this blog. The energy it takes to get ready and collect what you need. The fear of not being good enough. What if I you mess up? Do it wrong? Are judged by others? Okay, but what if I have an actual spelling error?! Or my punctuation isn’t spot on?
Beginning anything is exhausting. Sometimes I think we find it hard to begin because we’re already exhausted from even getting to the starting line. I can’t imagine how tired I’ll be if I even get to the finish line. Can you imagine?!
The countless amounts of books I’ve read, articles I’ve saved, talks I’ve had - they all come back to the same answer: just start. What is it we are actually resisting? The exhaustion, the anxiety, the scrutiny? I don’t believe in New Years resolutions because every day is a new beginning, a new slate that has been washed clean to pick yourself back up again and start something new.
When I started my business, it was a Wednesday, April 15th to be exact. I don’t remember the exact thought process but I decided to become a makeup artist, to fly the coop of corporate day-to-day work and just do my own thing. I have to say, it turned out pretty well. I am more successful than I ever imagined on that typical Wednesday in April. I just made a decision; there weren’t any fireworks or celebrations, popping bubbly or dancing, it was actually quite somber.
See, when you finally make the decision to start, you’ve fought half the battle, your next step can be whatever you’re comfortable with. Want to start a to-do list? Go for it, even if you haven’t checked one thing off that list. Maybe a social media post to announce it? Sure! Let your friends and family know you’ve taken on a new endeavor, you’ll need their support. When we make that decision to finally beginning there should only be one goal in mind, to be happy. Focus on what will put you most at peace and help you feel fulfilled in your life.
Success, happiness, joy, fulfillment - whatever you want to call it, it doesn’t have an end point, it’s a constant feeling of being. You will absolutely mess up, get things wrong, make mstakes (<— oops.. see?), it’s a constant battle to “begin”, but once you have, enjoy the freedom that comes with that. You get to choose whatever step that comes next, you’re actually in more control than you’ve ever been before and if you ask me, that’s something to be happy about.
